IT’S THE REAL McCOY was staged in St. Eoghan’s Centre by the Shrughawadda Players to full houses for four days last week. This was their first production since Michael Dowling retires as director. Alycia Kearney, as director, was masterful not only in the casting but also in her direction of the cast. The production maintained the very high standards that are expected of the Shrughawadda Players. Biddy Hawe, as Madge Molloy, who was on stage for most of the play, adapted to different emotional situations and once again was excellent. Caroline Doran, as her daughter Maura, showed a varied range of acting ability as required by her in portraying the character excellently. Sean Byrne, as Martin Daly, gave a superb acting performance in which subtle movements were essential to convey the character. Peter Dunne, as Fr. McCoy, once again demonstrated his enormous range of acting ability in conveying subtle complexities. Clare O’Neill and Suzie Hickey as mother and daughter Nora and Cora O’Hara, who were always together on stage, gave a first class performance in which each was dependent on the other so as to ensure the magical quality of their comic roles. Finally Tom Molloy, played by Willie Kearney, was unflustered in awkward situations and gave a performance of high quality.

Willie Kearney not only acted but was the set builder and co-designer with Lisa Carney of the set. Stephen Gilmore was excellent on Sound and Ciaran Moore and Michael Dowling were excellent in ensuring that the lighting was perfect. Stage management and Co-ordination was in the excellent hands of Marie Kelly and Jackie Kenneally. The next production is awaited.

MINISTER VISITS ST. JOSEPH’E HOME: On last Thursday Mr. Jim Daly T.D., Minister for Older People visited St. Joseph’s Supported Care Home in Kilmoganny. He was accompanied by Local Minister of State, John Paul Phelan T.D., who arranged the visit, Cllr. Pat Dunphy, and Stephanie Lynch from the HSE. At the meeting were representatives of Co. Kilkenny Supported Care Homes. Rev. Nicholas Flavin, Chairperson, gave an excellent presentation of the needs of the Supported Care Homes and the excellent care for elderly and value for money contribution which they make in communities. The Minister stated that he had learned an enormous amount about efficient cost effective care of the elderly from his visit. Representatives of the various Homes made very worthwhile contributions re the needs of Homes. Some additional short term funding will be made available to Homes but significant additional HSE funding is required by all the Homes. All who attended the meeting found it a good start in enlightening decision makers of the great cost effective contribution of Supported Care Homes. Supported Care Homes only exist in Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford and many decision makers outside of these counties are unaware of the enormous contribution of Supported Care Homes.
