DUNAMAGGAN GIRLS WIN CO. TITLE: 2016..The Year of the Underdog...Leicester City, The Irish Rugby team in Soldiers Field, and Dunnamaggin Girl’s Football team on Thursday, November 24th in Dunnamaggin! All had heart, all believed and all achieved! The Roinn C Girls football campaign was long and tough. The girls came up against teams from Owning (where one of our girls was injured and missed out on the rest of the season), Ballyhale, Mooncoin and Carrickshock. The quarter final was against Ballyhale and the semi-final was against Owning. All games were competitive. Girls from Kells, Kilmoganny and Dunnamaggin schools made up the strong panel of 29. All girls contributed during the league and each was paramount in getting to the final of the Roinn C football. The opponents were city side KSP, a team only relegated from Roinn B this year. The original date of the final was postponed due to complications on the opposition’s side, so it was agreed Dunamaggin would get home venue for the clash. The KSP’s road to the final was one of demolition, they beat each team comprehensively and that left Dunamaggin with the underdog tag! It was like a scene from the biblical story “David and Goliath”; the ground tremored as the KSP ran onto the Dunnamaggin turf. They were physical and strong, a daunting challenge for the home side.

Throw in was at 1.00 p.m. and the pitch was alive with pupils from the schools, teachers, parents, past-parents, grandparents, even support from teams we had beaten along the way!! The heavens favoured the change of day as the sun shone and only a slight breeze made conditions ideal.

Referee John McCormack threw up the ball and cracker of a game ensued. Dunamaggin may have been physically smaller, but they stood tall against the sturdy opposition. They fought for every ball, every girl had to out-smart and out-run her marker. The Dunnamaggin girls had to be at their best.  At half time Dunamaggin led by two goals but the game was far from over and they knew for the next twenty minutes it would take mettle, nerve and grit to hold the mighty Goliath at bay!

The second half was nail biting and the KSP put fierce pressure on the Dunamaggin backs. A super save in the 33rd minute by the Dunnamaggin goalie gave great heart to the team and they subsequently scored another goal making it a three goal margin. It was the stone that knocked Goliath!  The final score was Dunnamaggin: 5 - 4. KSP: 3 - 2. The scenes at final whistle were electric, the side-line dashed onto the field, the pitch was awash with green and gold.... Dunnamggin had conquered! Captains Hannah Persse and Aideen Hickey accepted the Roinn C Cup. Many thanks to the parents for driving the girls to matches and training sessions.  Finally well done to the coaches; Roseanne Connolly, Karina Langton and Noeleen Delahunty.

An underdog never loses....they find a different way to win the fight!! (photograph of team and of Hannah Perse and Aideen Hickey receiving to trophy)
