U 11 SCHOOL’S CHAMPIONS: The Dunnamaggin National school U11 boy’s team contested the Roinn B league final on Friday evening last against Urlingford NS. The Dunnamaggin lads came into the final having defeated Carrickshock & Danesfort in the group stages and the Rower Inistiogue in the Semi – Final. Although several weeks passed between the semi and the final the Dunnamaggin lads did not lose focus and keep training each week and their patience was rewarded when word came through that the final was to be played in Nowlan Park which was a big trill for the lads.

Dunnamaggin won the toss and chose to play with the very strong wind which was blowing towards the country end. The Dunnamaggin lads settled into the game very quickly and each to a man were out first to the ball with the first play of the game nearly yielding a score. It was not long before the first score came with Jamie Tallon splitting the posts from a long ball in, initially cleared excellently from the backs by David Moore. Next up the smallest man on the field, Noah Cahill made no mistake when a long ball in from Sean Rossiter bounced kindly and he duly rattled the net. Ciaran Hickey who was busy in midfield with his midfield partner Sean Lawton drove the ball over the bar. Urlingford were working hard but the Dunnamaggin lads were fighting for everything and when a long ball in from John Hayes fell in-front of Cathal Buckley he used his speed to turn his marker and head towards goal to open his tally. This meant that Dunnamaggin lead by 2 - 02 to no score. Then came a period of Urlingford pressure but good work back from midfield and good pressure from Captain Ross O’Neill and his half backs of Sean Rossiter and Pierce Costello meant any score was going to be hard got and no one was going to breach Thomas Deegan’s goal easily. As the game headed towards half time the Dunnamaggin lads knew they needed more scores with such a strong breeze and Jamie Tallon popped up in the right place and got himself a nice goal. Sean Lawton then added a point just on half time to send his side in 3 - 03 to nil up at half time.

The Dunnamaggin lads knew the pressure would be on in the second half against the wind. And indeed shortly after the restart Urlingford got a well worked point. They had reshuffled their team and it was paying dividends. They pressed again and got a goal which somehow worked its way through several sets of legs to bounce up kindly and give Thomas Deegan no chance in the goal. Dunnamaggin however held firm and with the ball not traveling as far against the wind Centre forwards Tim Doherty, Eoin Shiel  and Conor Lawton were breaking a lot of ball  around them and one feel nicely to  Cathal Buckley again to race forward to score a goal only for it to be ruled out for over-carrying. Back came pressure from the Urlingford puck out again but the full back line of David Moore, John Hayes and Jack McCormack were in top form with John, in particular clearing some great ball in the second half. Dunnamaggin held firm and Ross O’Neill had the privilege of climbing the steps of the old stand in Nowlan Park and accepting the trophy on behalf of his team. Special thanks must go to Tom Hickey, John Hayes, Pascal Connolly and James Rossiter for all the work with the team through the year. The Full Time score was: Dunnamaggin NS 3 - 03 Urlingford NS 1 - 01
