Sad passing of Eugene O'Donovan

15 July 2024

Dunnamaggin GAA wish to pass on our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Eugene O'Donovan. Eugene was all that epitomises community. He was instrumental in many ventures both within the club and within the community itself and further afield. Eugene was a master organiser. Anything he did, he did to perfection. Amongst many of his roles was the coordinator for the 'Big Raffle' which took place in the 90's as part of the development of the club (read an excellent account of this written by his daughter Mairead in the next slide). He and his great friend Dick had every inch of Kilkenny mapped out for his team of 'sellers' and they duly reported back to them every Sunday evening in Doherty's pub. He was inventive, spearheading the set up of the parish lotto in 1996. His many great friends have shared tales of Eugene's generosity. The Monday night the men finished the 'Big Draw' (drawing clay from the Slate Quarries to the pitch in Dunnamaggin to form the bank) seems to be infamous when Eugene, who arrived into the pub to do the lotto found himself 'sponsoring' the beverages! Eugene was secretary of Dunnamaggin Hurling Club for over 16 years. He had a great flair for fundraising therefore it was no surprise that his final event ‘The Big Push’ or 'Pushathon' as it became known as was a tremendous success in April of this year. Eugene's generosity was known by many, and done in a quiet unassuming manner. We are also acutely aware of the support and assistance of Eugene's beloved wife Siobhán in the background in all that he did. Dunnamaggin GAA and community are so grateful and privileged to have been steered by Eugene, to have worked alongside him and to have known him. Eugene's loss to our parish is a sorrow but his contribution has been immense.

Rest in Peace Eugene
