Kells Soccer Club

Kells Soccer Club(Est 2006)

KELLS F.C. was Established in 2006, and the team joined the Kilkenny Floodlit Football League, entering into the 3rd division, and for their 1st season and they finished a very credible 6th in the table. They also enjoyed a decent run through the cup/shield competition loosing out at 1/4 final stage.

In the 07/08 season the team battled all through the year and finished 3rd in the league to earn a promotion play-off game. The club went on to win that and gained promotion to Division 2. The club also had to play the final of the League Shield in the same week, and defeated Barna Villa on penalties to win our 1st trophy.

The 08/09 season begun and hopes were high. Division 2 is widely recognised as being the most competitive. Again the Club had a very good year and finished 3rd to earn a promotion play-off place. At the same time the Club were competing in the Division 2/3 Cup, and in the League Cup. Within the space of 9 days the club had to play the Cup Semi-final, the Division 2/3 Cup final and the promotion play-off game. Unfortunately we were defeated in all 3 games. At the awards night we were highly commended by the league for the clubs behaviour on and off the field.

The 09/10 season took-off and from the outset the club were in trouble. By Christmas were in a real relegation dog-fight. By the end of the season had dug themselves out to earn a play-off to maintain our Division 2 status. At the same time the club had got to the League Cup Semi-final and the final of the Division 2/3 Cup. Just like the previous year, they had to play all 3 games within 10 days of each other. Loosing the League Cup Semi-final they proceeded to the final of the Division 2/3 Cup and after a very hard fought draw, went on to win the match on penalties. Later  on the same evening , at the awards night the club picked up a very unexpected award, when the League voted them as the Kilkenny Floodlit Football League Team of the Year 09/10. And to cap off a very good week the club went on to record a victory in the relegation play-off to hold onto our Division 2 status. Through the Summer of 2010 the club entered in the Guinness Pub League and were defeated in the Cup final. The club also entered a team in a 6 a-side tournament for the 50th anniversary of the Irish Wheelchair Association and won it.
