The first L’Arche Community in Ireland was established in the Parish of Kilmoganny and Dunnamaggin.  At the invitation of Rev. Dr. Peter Birch, Bishop of Ossory,  Jean Vanier, founder of the L’Arche Communities came to Kilkenny and personally became involved (with the help of his sister Thrése), in the founding of the community.
Of course the desire of the local people in the parish, together with their personal involvement, planning, working together, building and contributing through prayer and care, made the vision a reality.

Mrs. Moira Moore,  generously provided the existing house in the village, with its extended gardens. Over the years since its foundation this house has been home to many of our 14 residents and has accommodated hundreds of volunteer assistants, both Irish and International, who lived there in communion with their brothers and sisters with intellectual disabilities. The garden has given purpose and meaning to the lives of our people through work and food produce since those early days and has hosted many a happy party.

The generosity of this small village community and its neighbours in Dunnamaggin, should never be forgotten and much of the growth and development of L’Arche Kilkenny today, is due to this firm foundation.
We take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all in the area to the schools, clubs and  great local neighbours who still care support this community of L’Arche Kilkenny.
