16/08/2015
U16 Roinn A ¼ final Vs Ballyhale 17th August 2015
The Dunnamaggin U16 hurlers took on Ballyhale Shamrocks in the ¼ final of their championship in Callan on Monday evening last. It was the Shamrocks who got off to the bright start with two quick points in the first 8mins before Eddie Dunne got Dunnamaggin on the score sheet with a good point. Shamrocks responded again with two quick fire points. Then came a purple patch for Dunnamaggin when Robbie McCauley slotted a free before Ian Walsh took off on a piercing run down the left hand side and duly dispatched the ball across the goal to the unmarked Nicky O’Shea who rattled the cross bar but Rory Lodge was on hand to rattle the net. Robbie added another free to put his team in front by two. Shamrocks however were too fine a side to lie down and hit back with three on the trot. As the half drew to a close Luke Fitzpatrick exchanged two fine points from play with his opposition to send the sides in with the minimum between them at half time. Dunnamaggin 1-05 Ballyhale Shamrocks 0-09.
Conor Brett came on for Nicky at half time. Dunnamaggin definitely started the second half the better with great work from Rory, Darragh O’Keeffe and Luke laying siege to the Shamrocks goal. Robbie slotted a free to level the sides but all the pressure failed to reap a further score. Ballyhale added two points to put some daylight between the sides but Darragh stood up and got one back. The Dunnamaggin backs were working tirelessly, the full back line of Killian Lafford ,Conor Hoban and Alex Moore were working well as a unit and giving the Dunnamaggin lads a good platform to work off but the scores were getting harder to come by up front. Then came the decisive point in the game when Ballyhale scored five points to Dunnamaggin’s one from a Robbie free as the game headed into the last 10mins. The Dunnamaggin lads would not conceed and when Killian Laffard met the onrushing attacker with a pile driver of a fair shoulder it reminded his opponents that they were in a match. Dunnamaggin slotted another free to put four between the sides. Shamrocks yet again responded with a point. Rory continued on his searing runs forward and Dunnamaggin did get further points from Jamie McLoughlin and Darragh but against the run of play Ballyhale found the net. A great battle and huge effort from the Dunnamaggin Lads.
