U12’s reach final of Midleton Blitz
The Dunnamaggin U12 team were invited to the prestigious Midleton U12 blitz on Saturday the 3rd Oct in Midleton, Cork. Midleton fresh from being crowded U12 Co. Champions had two teams in it and Fermoy, who had beaten Dunnamaggin earlier in the year at the John Locke’s blitz were the other team who Dunnamaggin were up against. The matches were of 15mins a side duration and were refereed by Cork Co. Board referees. Dunnamaggin were pitted against the first of Midleton’s teams first and in a frantic game a draw was the result. With little or no turnaround Dunnamaggin were next up against Fermoy who had just won their opening game against Midleton B. The Dunnamaggin lads were not about to let the Fermoy lads beat them twice in a year and sneaked a victory by a one point margin. In the final game Dunnamaggin narrowly lost out to Midleton B but in an intriguing twist both sides were set to meet again in the final as it all came down to scoring difference. Heading into the Final and with over an hour and a half of hurling played the Dunnamaggin lads were starting to tire but this did not lesson the spirits and they tore into their opponents and through great work by Denis Walsh, Shaun O’Keeffe and Jimmy O’Neill Dunnamaggin went into the lead narrowly at half time .It was the Midleton lads who struck hard in the second half with two goals to rock our lads. However, a long ball in from Denis Walsh eluded the keeper and bounced into the net this was followed up by another great goal from Shaun. Midleton were however never going to give up and broke through the Dunnamaggin defence to rattle the net again to level matters. They were the ones to finish stronger with a well taken free and a great point from play to crown themselves champions, devastation for the Dunnamaggin lads after a truly trojan effort by all 14 players. To reach the final was a serious achievement as Midleton are a big Cork club and had the majority of their lad’s right up to the age while the Dunnamaggin lads were much younger. This was the U12’s last trip out for the year and a trip to McDonalds on the way home was enjoyed by all.
