Minor Hurlers reach Co. Final
The Dunnamaggin Minor hurlers contested the Roinn B Co. Final on Sunday last 1st Nov against John Lockes’ Callan in Nowlan Park. Both sides had not met previously in League or championship so the outcome was hard to predict. It was Dunnamaggin who started brightly with a Morgan Thomas free after Michael Cody was fouled as he broke up the pitch. Morgan added another before Michael Cody slotted a 65’ 11 mins into the half. Then Callan started to get into their stride and hit over two points from play and another free in quick succession to level matters. Morgan slotted over anther free only for Callan to put a free over also. There was no real flow to the game as both sides were finding it difficult to manage the wet ground and ball after the heavy dew and morning fog. The remainder of the half continued to be a disjointed affair with Morgan hitting two more frees and Callan pointing a Free and a 65’ to send the sides in level at half time. Dunnamaggin 0-6, John Lockes 0-6.
John Lockes opened the second half scoring with a pointed free to put them into the lead for the first time in the game. Dunnamaggin responded with a great point from play under the new stand from Roy Cullen but yet again Callan pointed from play. Luke Fitzpatrick then pointed from play after some great all round work from the Dunnamaggin Lads. Dunnamaggin seemed to be getting a bit of an edge as we hit the 10 min mark and when the ball eventually found its way to the onrushing Dunnamaggin Captain, Ronan Coffey and a goal was on the cards but a 65’ was the result as the Callan defense scrambled very well. Michael put over the resultant 65’ to put his team one in front. John Lockes then embarked on a 10 min purple patch in which they hit Dunnamaggin for six unanswered points. A period that ultimately decided the champions. Conor Hoban made way for Rory Lodge. Dunnamaggin threw everything they had at the Callan lads in the last 10 mins and with Ronan now at Centre forward he did pick a point off, but despite the heroics of our lads Callan ran out winners and deserving champions. Dunnamaggin 0-10 John Lockes 0-16. Great credit has to be given to the Dunnamaggin players and Management on reaching the final and competing so well, particularly the defense lead by towering full back Brian Farrell and Co. Minor Michael Cody and through some heroics by Adam Fitzpatrick and Darragh O’Keeffe, Jack Crehan and Ian Walsh kept the Callan men goal less despite sustained pressure in the second half. Well done to this young team who only had three players up to the age. Your day will come lads.
