21/11/2015
DUNAMAGGAN U 21 HURLERS RETAIN TITLE: Last Saturday 21st November in Callan Dunamaggin U 21 Hurlers defeated Windgap/Galmoy by the narrowest of margins 0 – 12 to 1 – 8 to retain their Southern U 21 B title. For this time of year the pitch in John Lock’s was in very good condition and both teams served up excellent hurling. While the Dunamaggin team were over all more skilful they failed to show their superiority on the score board. Dunamaggin began very positively with the wind behind them and opened up a 0 – 3 to 0 – 0 in less than 8 minutes but then the Windgap/Galmoy team got into their stride and levelled the match. The first half scores for Dunamaggan came from John Fitzpatrick 0 – 3 from placed balls, Ronal Coffey 0 – 2 and Michael Cody 0 – 1. The half time score was 0 – 6 each. The windy conditions made scoring from what appeared easy frees difficult as both teams shot a pair of wides from placed balls. Dunamaggin had a great goal chance in the first half but the effort from Chris Keane just went wide. In the second half Dunamaggin again asserted themselves and opened up a two point lead with points from Ronal Coffey and John Fitzpatrick from a free. Then Windgap/Galmoy had a period of dom9nance during which they managed to get the ball into the Dunamaggin net following some heroic defending. They followed this up with a point and opened up a two point lead. The in the middle third of the second half Dunamaggin hit a number of scoreable balls wide but a point from a free by John Fitzpatrick settled the team. Michael Cody, Ronan Coffey and Victor Costello all added points to see Dunamaggin home. Two late long distant frees by Eoghan Kearney went to the wrong side of the posts but he made the correct decision in aiming for scores.
Jamie McLoughlin was sound in goal except for one or two anxious moments. The full back line of Conor Long, Aaron Doherty and William Moylan were solid as was the half back line of Paddy Delaney, Eoghan Kearney and Andrew Fitzgerald. At mid-field Victor Costello gave a man of the match performance and was the engine which propelled Dunamaggin forward when most needed. Beside him Michael Cody had a solid game. The Forwards of John Fitzpatrick, Ray Cody, Chris Keane, Ronan Coffey, Adam Kenneally and Roy Cullen always threatened and were unlucky that some of their nice moves did not result in scores. The substitutes were: Brian Farrell, Jason Doherty, Willie Bergin, Paul Kirwan, Morgan Thomas and Jack Brett. The team management was: Noel Hickey, Noel Lahart and Kenny Moore. Dunamaggin now face neighbours Danesfort in the County Final next weekend.
