U16 HL Vs O’Loughlins 18/04/2016
Dunnamaggin took on city team O’Loughlins in round 4 of their Hurling League in Dunnamaggin on the 18th of April. This Roinn A game started at a ferocious pace with both sides swinging into action the second the whistle blew. Eddie Dunne opened the scoring with a well taken point which was followed up with a goal from Robbie McCauley when a diagonal ball across the square eluded the goalie and rolled into the net. This did not rattle the O’Loughlin players who immediately responded with 1:01 of their own. All with only 6 mins on the clock. Robbie tapped over a free to sneak Dunnamaggin into the lead again but yet again O’Loughlins rattled the Dunnamaggin net. Credit to the Dunnamaggin lads they really stood up and responded very well to put in their best period of the game which rewarded them with a point from play from Eddie and three frees from Robbie, one of which was an enormous effort form the halfway line on the far side. Their opponents did respond with a well taken point but an excellent point from Conor Hoban just before half time sent the hosts in 2 points to the good Dunnamaggin 1:07 O’Loughlin’s 2:02
The Dunnamaggin goalie, Denis Walsh had to be alert from the start of the second half but he confidently dealt with two difficult balls that came his way to avert the danger. Ian Walsh then put over a point from play, a just reward for the huge effort he had put in so far. O’Loughlins were still very much in the game and both half back lines were excellent at keeping scores to the minimum. O’Loughlins sneaked over another point to close the gap as Andy Hickey entered the fray for Adam Farrell, and then put over another. However across the team the Dunnamaggin lads were standing toe to toe to their markers and working tirelessly. Robbie got yet another free but again they responded with two. As the game headed into the final 10mins Robbie got another free when Conor was fouled and then came the move of the match. Ian burst out of defence on one of his trade mark runs, dispatched it to the ever working Adam Fitzpatrick who rushed up the left wing who placed it into the palm of Conor Hoban (now at Full forward) and with his back to the goal turned and struck it to the back of the net. Four points the lead with only 4 mins on the clock. Credit to the O’Loughlins men they did not panic and they slowly chipped away at the lead as the whistle never seemed to come. But alas it did to give the Dunnamaggin lads a one point win in an excellent game where both sides displayed all that is good about Hurling.
