U21B Hurling South Final

04/12/2016
U21 Hurling South Final 4th Dec 2016
The Dunnamaggin U21 Hurlers retained their South title for the 4th year in a row in a bitterly cold Mullinavat against Piltown on Sunday last. The opening exchanges of this game displayed some excellent scoring on both sides with the scores tied on the ten min mark at 3 points apiece after points from Luke Fitzpatrick, Ronan Coffey and John Fitzpatrick. It was then when Dunnamaggin had their purple patch. It commenced with an excellent run towards goal from John after a great ball in from Eoghan Kearney which resulted in a point but it could have easily been a goal. John added another shortly after that from the placed ball. The Dunnamaggin backs were starting to look in mean mood and with Eoghan, Full back Aaron Doherty, Victor Costello and Ian Walsh impressing from the start any score that Piltown were going to get was going to be hard fought for. Michael Cody followed up John’s good score by delivering a dangerous high ball in which was not dealt with by Piltown and the ever sharp Dara Keane was there to scramble over the line. Jack Brett then came storming out from his corner back position from the resultant puck out and neatly placed it to Ronan who duly split the posts. Dunnamaggin 1-07 Piltown 0-03. As we headed for the half time break Piltown did exert serious pressure on the Dunnamaggin backs but Goalie Robbie McCauley, Aaron, Eoghan & co. we not about to let their goal be breached and they only conceded two points during the onslaught. Dunnamaggin had the last score of the half when Paul Kirwan headed for goal passed it to John who realised the score was not on and quickly passed it to Ronan who pointed. Half Time Dunnamaggin 1-08 Piltown 0-05.
Roy Cullen entered the fray for Willie Bergin at half time and Dunnamaggin took over where they left off with Ronan pointing from play again. Piltown were however playing with much more intent and traded points with us to bring the scores to Dunnamaggin 1-10 Piltown 0-07 after Eoghan got a long range free. The Dunnamaggin backs were again being tested but they stood firm and with the likes of Jack Brett, Darragh O’Keeffe and Brian Farrell making life difficult for their markers it seemed more and more it was going to Dunnamaggin’s day. Dunnamaggin started to drive for home with Piltown finding it more and more difficult to deal with the interplay between the Dunnamaggin forwards especially Ronan and John. Dunnamaggin added a further 6 points from Dara (1), John (4) and Ronan (1) to Piltown’s two points from frees. Well done to all involved on the win built on a foundation of very solid backs and forwards who too their scores when they were on. We now play Tullaroan in the Co.Final next weekend.
