Minor HL Final Vs Thomastown
15/08/2013
The Dunnamaggin minor hurlers were crowned league champions in Thomastown on Friday night. Having beaten Carrickshock earlier in the league Dunnamaggin did head into the game as favourites but it was evident from the start that this was going to be a tight affair. Ray Cody signalled Dunnamaggin’s intent with an excellently taken point from play in the first minute and followed it up with another a few minutes later, before Carrickshock responded with one. Carrickshock continued to test the Dunnamaggin half back line of Jack Brett, Aaron Doherty and Michael Cody but to no avail. Eoghan Kearney put over a 65 with the wind and Ray put over another point as Dunnamaggin seemed to be getting the upper hand. Ronan Coffey now traded points with Carrickshock to maintain his team’s 3point lead. Ray slotted another free but Carrickshock pointed again as well to send the them in at half time with a single score between them Dunnamaggin 0:6 to Carrickshock0:3
Dunnamaggin opened the second half very well. Morgan Thomas was now on the field for Brian Farrell and county minor panellist Paul Kirwan won some key ball at centre forward. Ray pointed a resultant free when Paul was fouled. Carrickshock also seem to spark into life and they added another two points to their tally and seemed to getting a foothold in the game. The ever working midfield of Willie Bergin and Andrew Fitzpatrick had to be at their best to stop Carrickshock getting on a roll. When Ray pointed another two frees and Carrickshock pointed 3 a real battle was on as we headed into the final quarter. Dunnamaggin 9pts Carrickshock 8pts. Then came the deceive moment in the match when Michael Cody who was brilliant throughout spotted that the Carrickshock man had slipped the defence raced over from his own wing to get a score preventing block in, the ball went down the field and Dunnamaggin won a 65. Eoghan Kearney stepped up to take the 65 and spotted the loose Andrew Fitzpatrick who was closer to the posts and Andrew made no mistake taking his point. Eoghan slotted a free nearly straight away before Carrick shock pointed again but Dunnamaggin had done enough. League Champions! Dunnamaggin 11pts, Carrickshock 9pts.
