20/09/2014
Minor Hurling
The Dunnamaggin Minor hurlers advanced to their championship quarter final on Saturday last when they defeated Emeralds in Callan. Dunnamaggin opened the scoring through a Michael Cody point in the first minute but Emeralds responded immediately. John Fitzpatrick then opened his account with a point but yet again Emeralds responded. Emeralds were attacking the Dunnamaggin defence with every chance and were testing Morgan Thomas in the gaol and his full back line of Jack Crehan, Aaron Doherty and Brian Farrell. Although the goal was not breached during this period of pressure, Dunnamaggin conceded three further points. John Fitzpatrick got one back with a well taken free. Then midway through the half Rory Lodge came on into the half forward line with Dara Keane moving to midfield and the Dunnamaggin inside forward line started to get some much needed ball. Dara fed a lovely ball to Ronan Coffey who sprinted to the goal and scored. Then in the next minute from nearly an identical ball in Chris Keane was the one to set upon the goal, Chris’s initial shot was stopped but Ronan was there again to finish the job. Rory Lodge then put over a huge point from well out to send the Dunnamaggin Side in at half time 2:04 to 0:05 up.
John opened the second half scoring with a well taken free and Dunnamaggin seemed to be starting the second half where they left off but Emeralds set about attacking the Dunnamaggin defence yet again. Despite some great hurling from our half back line and Midfield of Michael Cody, Victor Costello and Jamie Mcloughlin, Dara Keane and Eoghan Kearney Emeralds scored six points. John Slotted over another point from a free before Ronan put one over from play. Midway through the half Dunnmaggin started to finally gain control and it started when the ever skilful Eoghan Kearney put over a huge free from well inside his own half. Emeralds got one back but this was to be their last score. Killian Lafford came on for Roy Cullen. Dunnamaggin were winning their battles now all over the field. Rory put over another point from a very tight angle. Eoghan fielded a ball from the puck out, lost his marker and split the posts. John added another free before Eoghan put over a 65. Dunnamaggin, however had to be alert to Emerald on the break and Morgan was alert on his goal line and Aaron in front of him to avert any danger. It was Aaron who actually stopped a 21yard free that would of brought emerald back into it, had it been scored. Dunnamaggin had a final attack which saw John Fitz shot on goal hit off the posts but John managed to slot the ball over the bar from the resulting play and the final whistle blew.Dunnamaggin 2:13 Emeralds 0:11
