17/04/2015
U14 hurling
The U14 hurlers entertained James Stephens in their first game in the Roinn A HL in Dunnamaggin on Friday evening. The City side hit the ground running and racked up 3 points in the first Five mins. Harry Walsh then open up the scoring with a well taken free before James Stephens pointed again straight away. Denis Walsh was then fouled and he duly stepped up to convert his own free. Harry Walsh who was causing all sorts of problems to his marker anytime he got the ball took off on a run towards goal and eventually rattled the net. Harry then tagged on another point from a free and Dunnamaggin had seemed to stem the tide. James Stephens however added another two points before Denis responded with a free to keep his team in front by the narrowest of margins. Alex Moore was commanding the small rectangle and Dylan Crehan in front of him was clearing any ball coming his way. Denis put over an excellent point from play but the Village racked up three unanswered points before half time to send them into the lead by the slimmest of margins in what was turning out to be an intriguing encounter. Half Time Dunnamaggin 1:05 James Stephens 0:09
Dunnamaggin made some tactical changes at half time by moving Andy Hickey to the forwards and Shaun to the backs and it proved immediate reward when Andy flicked a ball to the back of the net after a clever touch on to him by Denis. Harry then got a great point from play to nudge Dunna in front. The Village however hit back nearly immediately with 1:02 to halt any advance. Dylan Carroll came on for Conor Denny 10 mins into the half. Denis tapped over another free to close the gap after his brother Harry was fouled as he continued to hurl up a storm. James Stephens however rattled the net again despite the best efforts of Joe Fitzpatrick in the goal. Dunnamaggin were then delt another blow when Harry had to go off as a blood sub mid way through the half. Jack O’Connell came on for Harry. The Village then pointed again and despite some great work from Dylan Crehan and Conor Brett and Co in the backs James Stephens were starting to finally edge this tight encounter. Denis Walsh moved out to midfield and scored a brilliant point but this was to be Dunna’s last score. Harry returned as Dan O’Neill made way. James Stephens turned the pressure in the remaining minutes and added two further goals just before the final whistle. Final score Dunnamaggin 2:08 James Stephens 4:13 a game much tighter than the scoreboard suggests.
