U14 Hurlers Lose out in Epic Battle
04 September 2012
U14 HC Quarter final Vs St.Fiacres
Dunnamaggin U14 hurlers bowed out of their championship after an epic battle with St.Fiacres in Callan CBS on Wednesday evening. Dunnamaggin started very well and raced into an early lead through goals from Conor Lawlor and Roy Cullen but St.Fiacres responded well with four unanswered points. Victor Costello and Conor Lawlor put over points to extend Dunnamaggin’s lead but St.Fiacres responded with a goal and a point of their own. Conor Lawlor put over another point for Dunnamaggin before Jamie McLoughlin made a great save, deflecting a point blank shot over the bar to send the sides in level at half time 1:6 to 2:3.
St.Fiacres started the second half best and put over four unanswered points. Dunnamaggin had many chances to close the gap but the wide count continued to rise. The constant pressure and work rate was eventually rewarded when Rory Lodge, Luke Fitzpatrick, Victor Costello all pointed. With Harry Walsh now on for Adam Fitzpatrick the momentum seemed to be swinging Dunnamaggin’s way but St.Fiacres broke forward again to force an excellent save from Jamie again and score two points putting three between the teams. The game seemed to be heading St.Fiacres way but the switch of Dara Keane and Victor Costello eventually paid dividends deep into injury time when Luke Fitzpatrick sent the ball to the net and the game into extra time after a huge goal mouth scramble. FT 3:6 to 1:12.
Dunnamaggin scored the only point of the first period of extra time when the ever present Victor Costello put over a fine score. St Fiacres pointed first in the second period of extra time but when Victor and Conor Lawlor put over further points the momentum seemed to be with Dunnamaggin but St.Fiacres were not about to give up and brought the sides to within a point, when their midfielder, who had been influenecial throughout broke the Dunnamaggin defence (who had been Excellent throughout) and riffled the ball to the corner of the net. St. Fiacres compounded the heartache for this excellently drilled Dunnamaggin team by scoring the last point of the game. The Dunnamaggin team were applauded off the field by supporters in recognition of an excellent 90mins of hurling.
